Fall session is here, and that means lots of fun classes ready to go! Unfortunately, low numbers meant that Readers Theatre was cancelled. Hopefully next session will see some more people sign up.
This past week, we started both SKiD and Creative Drama.
Students in SKiD experienced the low-pressure auditions with some fun games and acting exercises. I find that there is so much more to learn about a child's openness to creativity, comfort level, and willingness to do something you normally wouldn't when playing games as opposed to a "normal" audition. Everyone did extremely well! In fact, the group was so high energy, I've made the decision to change our script to better match their energy level. Starting this coming week, we will begin rehearsing "Who Killed Doc Robin" by Robert Fontaine. It's a fun satire on the classic murder mystery.
Creative Drama was also -- as always -- such a joy! In the 4-6 group, we learned about using our bodies to become something completely unlike ourselves -- creepy, silly trees! Students bent and twisted to match images of purple and orange trees they had just drawn, and loved their first chance to "act" in the class. They also had the opportunity to see the world from atop the stage when we talked about safety and being on display. The class ended with an exercise in imagination as we walked through a room of bubblegum and even became invisible!
The 7-10s were just as fun. Instead of trees, we worked to transform our bodies into monsters with several arms and legs, and even one with an upside-down head! We also journeyed up onto the stage both as a group and individually as students got their first chance to perform something for the group. Then we hunkered down and practiced creating stories, something we'll be doing A LOT in this class!
I hope your students enjoyed their first week as much as I enjoyed teaching it. As always, if there are any questions or concerns, I welcome you to contact me!
